Setting up the envrironment continued

Now go to frame 5 on the "tools" layer and press F6 to insert a new frame. Then do the same on frame 10 on the "links" layer and frame 15 on the "contact" layer. After you did this go to the "code" layer and inser a empty frame on frame 5, 10, 15 too. Check the picture below as a reference.

Setting up the navigation base clip

We are now ready to create some a sort of template for our navigation. We have to create 4 clips that almost look the same. They have a square as a background and a dynamic textbox showing us to which it navigates. We will just create 1 MovieClip named "navBase" and use it as a template for each navigation button.

Don't get confused between Buttons and Movieclips. I personally never have used the actual button option you see in the "Convert to Symbol" menu. This is because a MovieClip can act just like a button. And because i control everything rather by code then by certain frame states, i use MovieClips for everything.

Press control+F8 to open the "Create new symbol" popup menu and input this name: "navBase". Then if you are in basic view click advanced and select linkage name... as shown in the picture below. Then press ok.


After you did that you get a blank Stage in front of you... Now draw a 80x80 pixels square, double click it to select it and press F8 to "convert it into a Symbol". You dont need to give it a linkage name like but you must give it a name called "navBg" and press ok. As its still selected, go to its properties in the lower left corner and give it its instance name now: "navBg"! (Get really used to this!!!!) To be really good we should also rename its layer to "navBg" so we know thats the layer where our background clip resides.

Then insert a new layer on top of the "navBg" layer called "navTxt", and draw a small dynamic textbox like i did in the pic. It should be a dynamic textbox, with its text centered and placed like in the pic. Check the picture to check your setup against that!

Ok we got a background clip and a dynamic textbox setup. The textbox will be filled later with our main categorie names like "home", "tools" etc... Now go back to our main Stage again and select the "navigation layer" which is still empty at the moment. Are you there? .... now press F11, this opens up the Library. In our Library you can find all the objects we are using in this document. As you can see the clip we just created called "navBase" is also there. On the next page you can see an image of this!
